Our History

Doug Stuart and business partner Peter Lilley started stratsec in 2004, after recognising a gap in the Australian market for an independent information security consultancy. In May 2009 stratsec merged with SIFT, Sydney's largest information security and training firm, to form the leading, independent information security company in the region.  With our head office located in Canberra and other offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Singapore, stratsec now employs almost 50 full-time staff.  We have also commenced the establishment of an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As well as conducting engagements from our office locations, we have completed projects for clients located in Israel, New Zealand, USA, UK and Europe. stratsec specifically delivers services to the Australian Government and various State Government agencies along with overseas clients including Microsoft, SAIC, SanDisk and the Malaysian Government. stratsec has also worked with several financial institutions alongside its government and international clients.

Our company is vendor-neutral so that we can work with our clients to help solve their most difficult ICT and management problems, free from the pressure to push product or services.

Much of our company’s recent export success is largely attributed to the establishment in 2007 of an internationally accredited IT security evaluation facility (stratsec lab) and its independence from the security vendors.

In 2009, we opened our second facility in Singapore, as part of the recently established office in Singapore. The lab operates as an approved Common Criteria Testing Laboratory (CCTL), within the Singapore Common Criteria Evaluation and Certification Scheme (SCCS).

The stratsec lab operates under an accredited quality management system and delivers affordable, repeatable and reproducible quality outputs.  These include digital forensic, penetration testing, code review, common criteria product evaluations and vulnerability assessment services.

Our direct and pragmatic Australian approach to what is generally a complex business area has been a major advantage.  This approach has enabled stratsec to engage and win contracts with Australian / State Government agencies and major international software companies and governments, despite competition from large multinational players.

Key to the success of stratsec since our inception in 2004 has been the talent and commitment of our dedicated personnel and unique approach to aligning security capabilities with the risk profile of our clients.

This success has been recognised through the securing of Telstra Business Awards in 2007 (MYOB ACT Small Business Award) and 2008 (Panasonic ACT SME Award); the 2008 ACT Emerging Exporter Award; and the 2008 Froggy Award (SME category), awarded to the highest achievers in the Federal Government ICT market. stratsec was also named as the December 2008 winner of the 2008-09 Actew-AGL Canberra Times Business Success Series, coordinated by the Canberra Business Council.
