Canberra, 30 July 2010: stratsec, one of the leading providers of independent information security consulting and testing services in Australia and South East Asia will be signing a formal agreement with CyberSecurity Malaysia, an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia. The signing ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 4 August at The Crowne Plaza Canberra. This is the first time an Australian company or any commercially based security evaluation facility will set up operations with the Malaysian Common Criteria Certification and Evaluation Scheme (MyCC Scheme). The Honourable Minister for Science, Technology & Innovation, Y.B. Datuk Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili and CEO of CyberSecurity Malaysia, Lt. Col. Husin Jazri are honourable guest attendees at the agreement exchange.

The final signed agreement between both parties will mean that stratsec will test 14 Malaysian IT products for security flaws between July and December 2010 using the global benchmark for IT security – the Common Criteria, with further extensions into 2011 onwards. All evaluations will be conducted through local stratsec IT security testing laboratories; with formal operations having commenced on 26 June 2010.
“The Malaysian Government, through their economic stimulus package, has shown great understanding of the importance of IT security as a driver of the overall IT industry. Given the importance of IT security as acknowledged in the Australian Government’s recent Cyber Security Strategy, it would be great to see that reflected in investment to help Australian IT security products to be tested and certified, to help them compete on the international market”, Peter Lilley CEO stratsec.
This formal exchange between stratsec and CyberSecurity Malaysia affirms stratsec as a leader and expert within the industry and will assist the development of local IT security expertise in Malaysia; leveraging the expertise of stratsec in IT security evaluation and testing. Furthermore, the agreement will help grow a world class IT security evaluation facility in Malaysia and provide increased opportunities for Malaysian ICT product developers.
Doug Stuart, CEO of stratsec SE Asia Operations comments, “Establishing our new presence in Malaysia through this Agreement is an important next step in our strategy to open the Southeast Asian market for delivery of stratsec expert security consulting, testing and research services. Malaysia has a vibrant and developing IT security market and we want to be part of that journey.”
“We are very grateful for the trust and confidence shown in us by CyberSecurity Malaysia via this Agreement and we share a strong commitment to building a world class IT security evaluation capability in Malaysia.”
stratsec has been working with CyberSecurity Malaysia since 2007 to define and implement the MyCC Scheme. Throughout this relationship, stratsec has remained firmly committed to the development of a local specialist IT security industry in Malaysia. The final agreement between CyberSecurity Malaysia and stratsec will increase opportunities for Australian and Malaysian IT products and highlight such beneficial relationships to existing businesses.
"Collaboration with stratsec for our MyCC scheme will help to position Malaysia for the future -- by providing a strong branding for ‘Made in Malaysia’ ICT products -- due to compliance with well-known and recognised international standards ISO/IEC 15408. As a result of a strong MALAYSIA BRAND, consumer confidence and market demand for Malaysian-made ICT products will be greatly increased" Lt. Col. Husin Jazri, CEO CyberSecurity Malaysia.
stratsec has undergone rigorous evaluation of their competency and capability to be awarded the agreement. They have demonstrated through benchmarked international accreditations they meet stringent criteria eg ISO 17025 accredited for ICT security evaluation and functional testing and PCI-DSS Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) accreditations.
“It is an exciting portfolio to be at the helm of the Nation’s cyber security agency because there is no dull moment given the remarkable growth rate in Internet usage which presents an endless possibilities and vast opportunities for innovation.” added Husin.
CTO of stratsec Nick Ellsmore comments, “Building a team of talented IT security professionals in Malaysia will add to our capacity to meet the security challenges faced by our clients. We plan to develop the technical capability into a services hub that augments our Australian team and supports service delivery to our clients.”
CyberSecurity Malaysia hopes to attract further Australian ICT security businesses to enter the South East Asian market by promoting the development of a vibrant local ICT security capability in Malaysia. This agreement with stratsec will offer greater choice for Australian IT product developers to access IT security evaluation services in Malaysia or Australia.
