Those familiar with popular TV crime shows CSI and NCIS may recognise the term 'digital forensic investigation' and conjure up images of lab technicians replete with lab coats solving complex cases with intricate tools and techniques.  While maybe not as glamorous as those seen on 'primetime crime', digital forensics is a genuine process used by many organisations to support the investigation of information security incidents including: employee internet abuse; unauthorised disclosure of corporate information; Industrial espionage; and criminal fraud.

As organisations grapple with how to most effectively deal with the combination of an increasingly mobile workforce - and their need to be working on increasing amounts of sensitive data at the user endpoint - business owners and managers should take heart there are solutions to combat this issue.  The term Data Loss Prevention (DLP) has emerged as the latest security buzzword for the tools and techniques that target the prevention of unauthorised information leaks.

Cast your mind back a couple of decades to 1987.  You might recall - or, if you dare, you can certainly Google - the hairstyles, the choice of attire and not to mention some of the music produced in that year, symbolic of the '80s era. It was questionable at best; marginal at worst, which is probably being kind. While you can't draw too many parallels from 1987 to today in 2009 - certainly not the fashion and hairstyles and music faux pas of the day - there are some coincidences we can draw from that period: and of a far more significant and serious nature (some may argue otherwise of course).
