Leading Australian information security company stratsec has released details of critical security flaws in all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. This follows security flaws released for Adobe Acrobat and VMWare platforms in the last two months. stratsec is proud to be an Australian firm conducting internationally-significant IT security research.

A security advisory released today by stratsec warns of a security weakness in a third party component used by many software companies including VMware, potentially allowing the theft of user credentials. The vendor of the third party component - WebWorks - worked with VMWare and stratsec for approximately six months to develop the necessary patches to minimise the security risk to their clients.

This joint presentation examined the causes of data loss and what can be done to prevent it, along with what is considered best practice, and what can be done in the aftermath to recover from the situation. The presentation also considered the legal ramifications of data loss especially with the current climate of fining companies for declaring breaches.
